We do things differently: we sell new and used goods side by side. Our Field-Tested program keeps high-quality used items in circulation, while our new lineup fills the gaps when buying new simply makes sense. The result is a shop where you choose the gear that fits your adventure and your budget.

Our History
2016
Humble Beginnings
A conversation over beers led Jimmy Funkhouser to leave his corporate job and open FERAL on March 4, 2016.
The shop's first home was a 700-square-foot bungalow on Tennyson Street in Northwest Denver, stocked with a curated collection of new outdoor gear and apparel. From the beginning, FERAL was more than a retail store. Movie nights, book readings, climbing meetups, porch beers, and jam sessions turned a small storefront into a neighborhood hub.
We didn’t just sell gear. We built a community.
2018
Our Community Showed Up
In 2018, we learned we would lose our bungalow. A new location was secured just up the street but renovating a century-old theater required capital we didn’t have.
Our community raised over $100,000 in 30 days.
Not because they needed another gear shop. Because they believed in how we ran ours.
That support shaped everything that came next.
2019
Expanding Access
As we listened to our community, one truth became clear: price is one of the biggest barriers to getting outside.
So we shifted our mission from ‘create adventure’ to ‘create adventure for everyone.’ FERAL began building a model centered around high-quality used gear, carefully inspected, thoughtfully priced, and kept in circulation. The result was a more collaborative, more accessible approach to outdoor retail. Used gear wasn’t a sideshow. It became core to who we are.
Our Field-Tested program was born.
2026
Same Roots, Bigger Map
Today, FERAL has two storefronts, Denver and Grand Rapids, and an online shop serving customers across the country.
What started as a neighborhood experiment has grown into a national used gear program, built on the same principles that earned our community’s trust in 2018: fair pricing, a kind and knowledgeable staff, and a mission to expand access to the outdoors.
We’re still independent. Still hands-on. Still scrappy. Still the same shop our community backed — now serving yours.
