Built Differently

FERAL is an independent outdoor gear shop with locations in Denver, CO and Grand Rapids, MI. We are known for our used program, which has allowed us to drive down prices, collaborate with our community, and offer a larger selection of outdoor gear and apparel.

Humble Beginnings

2016

A conversation with a buddy over beers led Jimmy Funkhouser to quit his corporate job, opening FERAL on March 4, 2016.

Featuring a curated collection of new outdoor gear and apparel, the shop’s first home was a 700 sf bungalow on Tennyson Street in NW Denver. In addition to selling goods, FERAL spent its first years amassing a community within the Berkeley Neighborhood with movie nights, book readings, climbing events, porch beers, and jam sessions.

Our Community Refused To Let Us Fail

2018

In the spring of 2018, FERAL learned it would be losing its home. While a new space was located just up the street, FERAL needed to raise enough money to repurpose the century-old theater.

Our community raised over $100,000 in 30 days — not because they needed a place to buy gear. But because they cared about how FERAL ran it’s business.

Breaking Barriers

2019

Tethered to a mission that goes far deeper than selling graphic tees, we pivoted our mindset from ‘create adventure’ to ‘create adventure for everyone.’ The outdoor industry is not as inclusive as we believed it to be, and price is a significant barrier to getting people outside.

FERAL began to focus heavily on a fresh model — used gear, significantly driving down price, while being more collaborative with our community and offering a larger selection of gear and apparel.

Built Differently

Today

Though we've grown into a second community in Grand Rapids, MI and have our sights set on improving access to the outdoors on a national scale, we’re still the same scrappy shop. We’re a hub for adventure junkies of all types — not just because we carry great gear, but because we are working hard to build an inclusive and collaborative community that people want to be a part of.

Welcome to FERAL.

More Than A Slogan

Our mission, from day one, has been ‘create adventure.’ It’s authentic to what we care about most — getting people outside. Unfortunately, the outdoor industry tends to focus on elite athletes, and with that often comes elite prices. We don’t think it should be this way.

That’s why FERAL is an outdoor store built differently. We’re known for having a large selection of used gear combined with a curated selection of new gear in one place - with a focus on fair prices.
